CNR-ITAE
The Institute for Advanced Energy Technologies (CNR-ITAE) belong to Consiglio
Nazionale delle Ricerche, which is the largest Italian research organisation with
about 8,000 employees. CNR-ITAE has more than 40 years of experience in the
field of electrochemical and energy conversion devices including electrolysers,
fuel cells, batteries and renewable energy sources and is involved in coordination
of and participation in EU projects dealing with hydrogen production and fuel
cells. CNR-ITAE has also collaborated with Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking
(former Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 Joint Undertaking) to implement harmonised
test protocols regarding electrolysis components and system.
Within ADVANCEPEM, CNR-ITAE is responsible for project coordination and
management, catalysts development as well as physicochemical and
electrochemical characterizations and is involved in the components and stack
testing as well as in the dissemination activities of consortium. Collaboration with
Clean Hydrogen JU is also expected on safety aspects of the advanced high
pressure electrolysis technology.
SYENSQO (formerly Solvay)
Syensqo is a leading science-based company building on 160 years of legacy of the Solvay firm, diligently advancing technologies that enhance various facets of everyday life. Syensqo is one of the largest specialty companies in the world, born from a vision of innovation and growth, dedicated to having a meaningful impact in the industry and contributing to the creation of safer, cleaner and more sustainable products found in households, food and consumer goods, aviation, automotive, batteries, smart devices and healthcare applications.
Syensqo’s unique portfolio of market leading solutions addresses environmental and social challenges, through electrification, lightweighting, connectivity, serving a healthier quality of life for all. In addition, Syensqo is at the heart of the transition towards a net-zero economy, which is expected to drive new value creation and support the company’s long-term growth.
With a diverse global team of more than 13,000 employees in 30 countries, at Syensqo people work together to advance science and help humanity move forward.
Within the ADVANCEPEM project, Syensqo will develop and improve the preparation of short-side chain perfluorinated Aquivion® ionomers able to operate at high temperature and pressure. Syensqo will also lead the development of innovative reinforced membranes and radical scavengers specifically designed to operate at higher pressure and temperature with the aim to improve device lifetime.
IRD
IRD is a large industrial business with specific competences on production of
membrane-electrode assemblies for electrolysis and fuel cell applications,
electrocatalyst development and up-scaling of electrochemical processes. The
core competencies of the company are in manufacturing of MEAs and bipolar
plates (BPP) in high volumes. IRD facilities include an electrode/MEA
manufacturing line, BPP manufacturing line, formulation lab, R&D
manufacturing pilot-lines and an electrode/MEA test lab.
In the ADVANCEPEM project, IRD will develop innovative MEAs with integrated
recombination catalyst designed for high pressure operation.
RWE-Power and RWE-Generation
Generation of renewable power and hydrogen are core activities of the RWE
group. The two affiliates RWE-Power and RWE-Generation complement each
other as end-user of the developed ADVANCEPEM technology in an optimal
manner and cover two use cases. RWE-Power was, and is, partnered in various
national and international projects to develop, demonstrate and implement
electrolytical hydrogen production as a basis for CCU. The operational
infrastructure at RWE’s Innovation Centre at Niederaussem will be used for long
duration testing campaigns (24/7 operation) of the integrated ADVANCEPEM
demonstrator under real boundary conditions. For RWE-Generation the
production of green hydrogen is a key strategic pillar. For this, RWE-Generation
will implement various hydrogen projects in the near future.
Both RWE-Power and RWE-Generation will jointly contribute to ADVANCEPEM
with their detailed knowledge both in the installation, commissioning and
validation of new technologies, as well as their extensive experience regarding
energy market demands.
Oort Energy
Oort Energy is a new, innovative electrolyser company founded on over 40 years’
experience in the field with a specific mission to make green hydrogen
economical and drive the transition to net-zero. Oort has developed technologies
to make electrolysis economical and sustainable by implementing innovative,
proprietary solutions that blend performance and durability in systems that
deliver market-leading operational and capital efficiencies.
In the ADVANCEPEM project, Oort will be responsible for designing and
manufacturing a compact PEM electrolysis stack prototype for high pressure
operation as well as for the improvement of the associated balance of plant.
HSSMI
HSSMI is a sustainable manufacturing innovation consultancy providing expert
advice to help manufacturers scale up, increase productivity and transition to
circular economy practices. Based on expert knowledge in several solution areas,
such as hydrogen propulsion, battery technologies, circular economy,
manufacturing strategy and lean manufacturing & automation, HSSMI helps in
accelerating manufacturing competitiveness, whilst decelerating its negative
impacts on the environment and driving net zero.
In the ADVANCEPEM project, HSSMI will assist CNR-ITAE in management and
lead dissemination and communication activities as well as techno-economic
analysis. HSSMI will assess and define potential challenges with manufacturing
the technology at volume and how the processes used to manufacture high
pressure electrolysers can be improved through the use of alternative equipment,
tooling, and/or machinery, or through minor design changes.
